In Dedication to Silvio Olivieri

Today, I just found out that Silvio Olivieri passed away last week, when I saw him in the front page of my school newspaper, The Diamondback. Here is a link to the article online.

You were a great person with a very big heart to say the least. Rest in peace Silvio.

Note: I edited the previous sentence because I had phrased it wrong.

Spring Break Reloaded

the falls were really prettyIn a blink of an eye, another spring break has come and gone. While the title of this post makes a lame reference to a lamer movie title, I was actually thinking about what I was doing last year over spring break. Even though the posts from the archives made it seem like nothing much happened, they neglect to mention a lot about our trip to Mexico, and our stereotypical "Spring Break in Mexico" experience. It was actually a unique thing for me; I've never seen any actual machine guns up close before.

Spring break this year was a bit more laid back. Before I realized that I was sick, a couple friends and I decided it would be a good idea to pile 5 people into a nice 2 door Mirage and head out to Yosemite to camp.

After four fun filled hours of the same 2 CDs we arrived at the park. Man. It was good to get a change of scene, plus, since we went on a weekday the crowds were small, and we could really go all over the place. Suprisingly, we got a fire started without using copious amounts of lighter fluid, and we even succeded at cooking an edible dinner. Things were great until night, when the temperature fell - to about 34 degrees. We had been thinking about renting sleeping bags the day before, but as Manly Men, Dong and I didn't see the need, and only brought blankets for the night. Great idea Noah. Great frekin idea.

During some of the off-roading on our trip (don't ask), we drove past this sign. I like how they post every warning concievable up there. The signs read as at ghettotoyota.com, we fully endorse playing with firefollows: "Steep One Way Road", "Road Closed", "Impassable, Not Maintained During Winter", "Road Unsafe For Public Traffic"

Now come on, doesn't that just beg you to drive in?
daamn

All in all (except the whole freezing my ass off all night thing), it was a good trip, and a quality time. I was planning to rant more on the inequality of life and such, but alas, I can see missing my class in 15 minutes, so I'll just leave with this pic from the trip.

the mist from the falls soaked us pretty good

Maryland Riots

So as many of you know, University of Maryland won the ACC Championship against Duke. Of course with UMD tradition, we riot. Here's a link to some photos of the event. That is on Route 1 and it got blocked off completely. No cars were allow to drive by and it is a pretty traffic heavy road. A fire was started and some signs were pulled out and destroyed.

In the last few days, UMD police set up a website to post pictures of individuals that they want to identify because they have evidence against them. It is pretty funny IMO because they are pretty screwed.

Hung - Mania

I don't know what I should title this, Hung-watch? Hung-update? Anyway, y'all know that I am UC Berkeley student, and like all good Berkeley students, am obliged to keep up-to-date on all the Hung-happenings. So I was browsing around Fatwallet this afternoon, and to my semi-amazement, I noticed a thread on the great William Hung. Apparantly, avid fans can now get their hands on the first (only?) William Hung CD - it's available for pre-order at Amazon.com. While I'm sure the social and political implications of this are going to be huge, I just wanted to point out my connection to connection to the impending worldwide fame doubtlessly linked to this CD. See those two girls on the cover? Yeah. The happy looking ones. That's Sheila and Vivienne, and they live down the hall from me. They said that they were eating food at the DC one day, and some random guy came up and asked if they wanted to be on the cover of the William Hung CD. And there ya have it. Those people are random berkeley students posing in front of our Dining Commons. I'm not sure what to make of the Hitler-esq pose of our hero there. Is this the "I'm-gonna-take-over-the-world-one-Ricky-Martin-song-at-a-time" look? Oy.

Well, it's finally the beginning of Spring Break for me. Most people have already migrated back down to LA, leaving it kinda empty here. Good for kickin back and playin some loud music. Hmm, there is that rescomp party tonite. Hmmmm.

David A. Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon

Man, today's been a strange day. I'll start with the big university annoucement.

So yesterday everyone at Carnegie Mellon University recieved the following cryptic email regarding the business school:

Date: Thu, 18 Mar 2004 17:57:10 -0000
From: Official Communications
To: undisclosed-recipients: ;
Subject: Major university announcement

MAJOR UNIVERSITY ANNOUNCEMENT

The university will be making a major announcement regarding the business
school at noon on Friday, March 19.

A live webcast of this historic event will be available tomorrow at noon at
www.cmu.edu/bschool.

Click the link below for more:

http://www.cmu.edu/bschoolmakeshistory/alum

In the two years i've been here, this is the first time the university has ever made a big deal out of anything. So after looking around the net a little, I found this article. As it turns out, the associated press was accidently given the press release, which wasn't supposed to go out until today.

The official CMU announcement can be found here. According to the official release, the $55 million that David A. Tepper donated to the school of busniess is the largest donation the school has ever received, and the second largest donation a business school at a university in the US has ever recieved. Based on this list, the University of Virginia for $62 million in 1999.

I'm not busniness student, but what does this all mean for students? Well, the Carnegie Mellon School of Business will now be known as the David A. Tepper School of Business. It also means since today was the day of the big announcement, there's going to be free food and other free stuff. I got myself a free shirt and a pretty nice mug. Thanks Mr. Tepper!

Me and a few friends walked into the graduate student reception so we could take some more free stuff and free food. While we were their, David A. Tepper walked in and recieved a standing ovation while cameras and photographers took photos, and news crews filmed the event. The only thing I could think about was what it feels like to be worth $3 billion.

On a slightly unrelated note, while I was waiting outside the reception where the university made the announcement, I met the guy that got robbed a few nights ago, the same person that it took the entire campus police force to handle. The night after I got locked out till 4am, everyone got this email:

Date: Thu, 18 Mar 2004 13:38:40 -0000
From: Official Communications
To: undisclosed-recipients: ;
Subject: CRIME ALERT #2004-1: Robbery, Morewood Towers

#2004-1

March 17, 2004

ROBBERY

Carnegie Mellon University Police received a report from a student that he was
robbed early this morning in front of one of the residence halls.

At approximately 1:58 a.m., on Wednesday, Mar 17th, a Carnegie Mellon student
walking south in the 1000 block of Morewood Avenue by himself observed a lone
male standing in the driveway between Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Phi Kappa Theta
fraternities. When the victim got to the bus shelter in front of Morewood
Towers, the subject approached him from behind, greeted him, started a
conversation, and demanded money. During the encounter, the suspect had his
hands in his pockets as if he were holding a gun, mentioning to the victim that
he did not "want to have to shoot" him. No gun was observed by the victim.
After obtaining an amount of currency from the victim, the suspect walked away
heading north on Morewood Avenue toward New House. The victim was not harmed.

I thought it was kind of funny that I randomly met the reason I was locked out till 4am. As it turns out there was a 'weapon' but he didn't actually see it. And the robber got off with something like 6 bucks. It turns out the guy that got robbed was a friend of a friend. He said there were something like eight cops there. I think that reflects how badly every CMU cop wants to be the first to respond so he can pull out his gun and say some cool line that'll make him feel like a badass.

And now for the news.
I wonder what kind of nutritional value this juice has? Apparently a worker in some warehouse found liquid cocaine in some fruit juice containers that had been shipped from Jamica. As it turns out, that one can was worth $40,000. I wonder how much juice actually made it to the shelves?

World of Warcraft Beta

I had to post this. The very highly anticipated World of Warcraft Beta has just started. The first phase of emails is being sent out. Over 400,000 people has signed up and the chances of getting it is slim. Hopefully I'll get a couple because I signed up using 8 different email accounts with all different information so I wouldn't get disqualified. If I get a couple, I'm probably gonna end up selling some on eBay for a good $300-$400 for one registration key. Hopefully I'll get in!

Caught on National TV!

Awww the poor little kid is crying. I missed it on TV but a friend sent me this picture. Apparently, they kept on showing them on TV but never actually made any comments on it. I think it's pretty damn funny. Imagine after they go home and realize that they were on national TV. The kid is crying and the dad looks really REALLY sad. The dad looks like he's going to go home and cry.

Back in the Pitt

Just drove back. Man, that drive was an adventure. Me and Devon stopped everywhere because we're idiots. Once we're in the general vacinity of Pittsburgh (meaning 376, the locaql highway), its snowing. The week before we left was gorgeous. I suppose Pittsburgh is telling us that its going to make us suffer for the week of bad weather that we missed.

Anyway, the pit stops on the drive up ought to be worth the long, dragged out drive up here. Hahaaaaa, what whistles and pops in the night? Good times.

Summer Plans and Random Stuff

So I was just browsing on people's AIM profiles today inbetween classes, and our buddy Mike has this link on our profile:

DaVinci Code Webgame

And Lo, my nap time between class was wasted playin this webgame. It was actually pretty fun, brought back the days of playin the psuedo-secret webgame surrounding the A.I. movie. The game was really revolutionary when it was first organized about two years ago. Now there's a whole genre related to this type of blurred-reality gaming, and they write mainstream news stories about it. I really think this is the future of gaming. One in which we are not simply glued to a screen, one which requires the active real-world involvement of thousands of people working together. In Australia, they're already running the first 3G mixed reality game using online players and street players with cell phones. It's called I like Frank, and it's really cool stuff.

Calvin and the Hobbes is da bomb. Here are the random cool sites to visit for today:

The Exorcist in 30 Seconds .. reenacted by bunnies - I haven't even seen the Exorcist, and this is pretty cool.

Calvin and Hobbes Search Engine - You can do a word search on any Calvin and Hobbes comic, and it'll give you the strip that it occured in. Remember that noodle incident?

Well, looks like this is gonna be a Cali summer for me. Just picked this up in my email earlier today:

...Congratulations! I would like to officially offer you the Lead Network
Security position for the 2004-2005 academic year. We're very pleased to
welcome you to the Lead Staff team...

I'm still waiting on the business school results, and the SF internship, but I think I'll be stayin here working this summer. I don't really know how to think about it yet, - summer is only 3 months away, and yet I feel like it's far in the distance. Well, at least the weather out here will be kickin. I think I forget what humidity feels like. ;]

Good Music

A day in the all entertaining dorm life. I was just walking up to my room from my job interview today, and in the first floor lounge was an acapella group from Duke! They came all the way from Duke to sing for us in the dorms. I was so touched.

Kickin' it old school

I guess tonight was a pretty typical night in the MoCo. Watched a crappy movie, got bored, went to 7-Eleven, got a Slurrpy, went to Taco Bell, and got a burrito. Except this time it was all before midnight, so I guess i'm getting old.

Oh yea, Pi is a terrible movie. I rented it this morning, and the movie makes me feel like i was duped into getting a lesser product that had only two colors. That was such an artsy movie it sucked. The word 'crap' came to mind several times during the movie. I'm just more angry with the fact that i actually spent money on that trash. If I could talk to the director or whoever concieved this pile of horse shit, I'd tell him that I think he filmed the movie and realized afterwards it was terrible. Then when he realized it was terrible, he figured 'oh, maybe i can pretend it's an artsy movie. I'll just make it black and white and maybe people will still appreciate this thing that i wasted my money and my life on.' But the thing is, anyone that's ever gone to college, or even grade school knows that'll never fly. How many of you have completed your project and then realized its totally crappy? So you change your 'original intent' to 'trick' your teacher into liking it better. Atleast in college, your teacher doesn't humour you. They grade it at 4am the night before they're supposed to hand it back, and they stencil's out the C for 'Crappy idea' onto the top of your project. So basically, I hated this movie and you shouldn't spend money to see it. You shouldn't even spend your time to see it. In fact, the only time you should watch this trash is if you're an insomniac and you need to go to sleep.

Overall rating for this movie: Trash

As for the rest of the night, the Slurrpy was good. So was the Taco Bell. I guess there's very little i can count on anymore.

What a week

So midterms were last week. I went about 4 days without sleeping and watched the sun come up 3 times. Watching the sun come up is like a tv show without the credits. You need the night so you can sleep like you need the credits so you can piss. Anyway, thats over now, so now I'm chillin' at home in MoCo for the next week or so.

So what else has been going on? Well, Bill Gates was on campus last week giving a talk about advances in the computer science field. I watched part of the video recording of it online; to me it seemed more like he wanted to demo future Microsoft products. I watched about a half hour or it, and most of it was pretty boring. He tried to crack a few jokes to make the audience laugh, but no one really laughed at anything he said. Here's how he was welcomed to CMU by part the student body.

ok, enough about school.

I'm sure everyone has seen someone that's amazing at DDR, that, in high school devoted their days and nights to mastering and memorizing everything about that game. But I don't care how good you are (well, maybe Crazy Legs from Kings Dominion back in summer 2002), you got nothing on this guy . You might need a newer version of Quicktime to play it properly.

Anyway, thats all for now. I should be around the MoCo for atleast a week, so feel free to give me a call if you want to kill some time.
